Waratahs punt on club coach Steve Smith
Posted on 18 January 2013 - 01:27
RICHMOND and TASMAN have signed two veteran hookers from Melbourne and another from Newcastle after leaving the Storm to stay with the Cowboys.
They have now signed the likes of Adam Gilchrist and Peter Wallace, who played two seasons for the Storm in 2010 before being released, respectively, by Melbourne and the NRL as part of their contract negotiations.
Wallace, a former Storm hooker, has started all 14 games he has played for the Cowboys this season with Gilchrist playing just two games.
It is believed both men will add to the Lions' nine NRL players already in the Storm system.
And it shows how strong Richmond are on their hands with three players already signed, with Luke Dahlhaus, Jarrad McVeigh and Trent Hodkinson having both signed before the beginning of the season.
Smith is still trying to persuade coach Mal Meninga not to put a player at centre forward in order to play a hybrid system and that position could even be used as a fullback in the future, which would require a bigger forward pack.
There are a number of ways you could look at it.
Either way, Smith continues to have faith in Scott Sewell, who looks to be one of the Cowboys' marquee signings during the off-season.
Smith praised the move from Melbourne and said that the team will get some solid veteran help off the bench.
"We're putting together another good package at outside centre," Smith told the Cowboys.
"Adam Gilchrist is another outstanding one, he's a class act, I think he'll start playing first grade, and then we'll start seeing if they can develop the young boys.
"Peter Wallace is a wonderful utility who gets things going with the ball and his fitness is fantastic. He should get into a bit of rhythm and that's all that we're after."
It's hoped that the addition of a couple of young players will improve the Cowboys' young backline further.
And it is with great anticipation for both men that the Cowboys make their move to play at AAMI Park on Friday.
The win over the Warriors on Monday night was a huge lift for the Dragons, who had looked dead in the water in recent weeks with a 10-point blowout loss at the hands of the Sharks.
But, now, there is a belief that their next game against the Sea Eagles will have a significant influence on whether the Dragons can get the three points.
They will also be looking at getting a better start after losing their first game at Domain Stadium for 20 years as they now take on a much more potent outfit |
