Webber claims pole in japan
HANDAI (Reuters) - A 24-year-old Japanese-American engineer who claimed to be an Islamic State fighter at home was killed by a U.S. air strike when he drove into the country's capital of Tokyo and tried to blow up a shopping mall, police and witnesses said on Monday.
"Our information is the only one who could have been responsible for this. If an American citizen is carrying out attacks inside Japan and they become radicalized with the ideology of Daesh, that could cause them to blow up a shopping mall," police officer Koichi Noguchi said.
The U.S. military said in April that it conducted an air strike against a training camp in Iraq near the Syrian border and killed a U.S. citizen believed to be an Islamic State supporter, but not before the camp was blown up.
Noguchi said the pilot was killed after attempting to drive into Tokyo with a suicide vest. He would not say exactly how the pilot managed to hijack a motor vehicle or enter the country, and he declined to confirm whether there had been a connection to Islamic State.
U.S. officials were trying to determine exactly what role the driver played in the June 9 suicide bombings at an Ariana Grande concert that killed 32 people and wounded hundreds more in Manchester, England. The United States and Britain have accused the Islamic State group of responsibility for the attacks, but Noguchi said it was a case of mistaken identity and not terrorism.
The attacks also damaged a core Islamic State ideology. The Islamic State, which has seized large parts of Iraq and Syria, has drawn millions of followers from across the world, including those in western countries that sympathize with the group.

Saleyard breaks livestock record in Kansas
A new Kansas law aimed at reducing animal mistreatment is making its debut and may give meatballs that look like this a run for their money -- just like this one.
The law, approved by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, requires all livestock to be treated with an anti-fungal shampoo that is tested by an accredited lab before being sold.
When Kansas passed its law in 2008, dairy farmers were still buying animal shampoo just to get an idea of what it would do to their cows and calves.
"It's very important to know how it reacts with our blood and the microbes and the pathogens that we have on our bodies, if we have anything that's going on with a meatball or anything else that's on a meatball, then we have to understand about what that is going on," said Lisa Nader, legislative analyst for the non-profit conservation nonprofit Kansas Farm Bureau Federation.
But it hasn't been easy.
KDFF says it has received questions from dairy farmers who've taken this approach to their animals without testing the shampoo.
"A lot of folks have been very hesitant to do something about it. They didn't know the results were going to be negative, so they just waited and they waited and waited," Nader said.
It doesn't stop here.
The law would prohibit the sale of beef that has been treated with anti-fungal shampoo before the dog or cat is slaughtered, or even been purchased through a breeder. It would also prohibit the sale of any meatballs or other meat products that have had "any trace amounts of the banned ingredients" in them tested by a lab before they are sold to meat packers or retailers.
The bill was signed by Gov. Sam Brownback last week, despite the backlash from some animal advocates.
While the bill doesn't have the full support of most Republican lawmakers, most GOP legislators had previously said they'd oppose it, including one state representative who was one of only about 20 legislators to oppose it.
"If you just want the truth and you just want to know, I understand the importance of testing it, I understand the need for it and I understand that it has been abused in Kansas for 50 years and nobody wants to see it abused again," Republican Rep. Mark Johnson said.
But even though the meatballs have been banned from sale, a sales tax is still being collected from any sale in the state. And there are still other restrictions the law applies to.
For example, the bill requires that the food must be sold in a way that does not encourage food borne illnesses or the spread of disease, and it forbids meat manufacturers from selling beef that was give |
